Burano, Venice, Italy

Burano is a fishing village on an island in the Venetian Lagoon and about a 45 minute vaporetto ride from our hotel.  Like Venice proper, this island is laced with canals, narrow pedestrian streets,  and boats. Venice buildings have color but a bit more subdued.  Burano goes all out with brilliant, contrasting colors, and photographing there was joyous.

Burano also suffered from the flooding and the windy surges from the ocean outside  the lagoon.  We saw several boats which had overturned and sunk, one had crashed over the cement edge, tearing a hole in the hull and submerging most of the cabin.  A couple others were up on shore where they had been tossed.  At some point while we were there, all the streets had standing water.  The photos below show some where the water covers the walkways, some where it has receded part way and some where the tide has receded below the cement cap on the walkway that marks the edge of the canals.

This area worked well photographically and we went out there twice.  On our second trip, the assignment, besides finding spectacular images, was to make a photograph to share with the group that included reflected light and the bright colors which proclaim Burano.  But with all the water, that was the one thing we could not include in the image.  I found any number of images, but the one I submitted was of exterior pipes on a building and the soft shadow of a shutter handle created by the reflected light of brightly painted homes on the other side of the street which had direct sunlight.

The second trip out, some of the group left earlier to stop at nearby Murano Island, noted for glass blowing.  But since we were not shopping and were excited about the photo ops of Burano, Chris and I remained a few more hours.
